Tomorrow's Trade Idea, Today

THIS GROCERY STOCK COULD RIPEN FAST

RBC Sees Fresh Upside

RBC Capital Markets $RY ( ▲ 0.6% ) sees a fresh opportunity for Sprouts Farmers Market $SFM ( ▲ 4.26% ).

The bank upgraded the specialty grocer to Outperform, with its new price target of $148, implying roughly 40% upside from current levels. Analyst Steven Shemesh believes the organic-focused chain looks like an appealing entry point after a steep sell-off.

Sprouts’ stock is down 18% over the past month and 35% since June, badly underperforming both peers and the broader market. But RBC says the weakness has gone too far.

Growth That’s Rooted in Change

Sprouts shares now trade around 9x the firm’s 2027 adjusted EBITDA estimate — a valuation that already bakes in slower comparable sales and overblown concerns about promotions. For investors, RBC argues, that mix of pessimism and low multiples adds up to a compelling setup.

Shemesh expects comparable-store sales growth to swell to 4%–5% over the medium term, up from the pre-pandemic average of 3%. The company has been seeding that growth through product innovation and better supply chain efficiency — cutting time from farm to shelf to improve freshness and margin.

Sprouts launched more than 7,000 new SKUs in 2024 and plans to accelerate new product rollouts this year. The analyst says that effort, combined with nationwide innovation across departments, should help differentiate Sprouts from larger grocers and expand its customer base.

Marketing and Momentum

Sprouts has modernized its marketing mix too. Before the pandemic, about 85% of spending went to paper flyers. But today, it’s increasingly digital, with stronger attribution and a national loyalty program rolling out this year.

Partnerships with delivery platforms like Instacart $CART ( ▲ 1.91% ), DoorDash $DASH ( ▼ 1.09% ), and UberEats $UBER ( ▲ 0.18% ) are adding convenience, while a rebound in organic food sales could give Sprouts an extra tailwind. If Shemesh is right, this beaten-down grocer may be about to deliver some very fresh returns.
