Tomorrow's Trade Idea, Today
PUTTING THE ‘UP’ IN BREAKUP

Breaking Away to Break Out
Viasat $VSAT ( ▼ 0.97% ) has rocketed higher in 2025, and JPMorgan $JPM ( ▼ 0.38% ) thinks the next leg up could come from a breakup.
The bank upgraded the satellite communications firm to Overweight from Neutral and doubled its price target to $50, implying another 28% gain from current levels.
The call comes amid rising expectations that Viasat could spin off its fast-growing Defense and Advanced Technologies division, known internally as DAT.
The Case for Separation
DAT has quietly become one of Viasat’s strongest assets. The unit posted a record backlog of $1.2 billion in the second quarter, up 31% from a year earlier, as governments and private clients ramp up spending on secure satellite communications.
JPMorgan said separating the segment or restructuring Viasat’s debt-heavy balance sheet could help surface value that’s been buried within the conglomerate structure.
CEO Mark Dankberg hasn’t committed to a timeline, but acknowledged during last week’s earnings call that the company is “always evaluating these options.” Investors seem to like the sound of it, as shares have risen nearly 300% this year.
A Higher Orbit Ahead
JPMorgan’s Sebastiano Petti argued that spinning off DAT would give investors cleaner exposure to a business riding powerful secular tailwinds from military demand to the race for resilient, space-based connectivity.
Wall Street remains divided on the stock, but JPMorgan’s upgrade signals growing conviction that Viasat’s value lies in simplification. If management follows through, investors could soon see that breaking up is sometimes the fastest way up.
