Sunday Spotlight:

CHEAP ENERGY TRUMPS IDEOLOGY

For years, solar power sat near the top of the conservative culture-war list. Now some prominent MAGA figures are embracing it.

The shift has less to do with climate change and more to do with electricity. America’s power demand is surging as AI data centers expand. Tech companies warn that new projects are increasingly constrained by access to electricity.

Solar is emerging as one of the fastest ways to add capacity to the grid. The US Energy Information Administration estimates solar and battery storage will account for roughly 79% of new generating capacity added to the grid this year.

That reality is forcing a rethink on the right. Conservative figures such as Newt Gingrich, Kellyanne Conway, and Tony Fabrizio have begun promoting solar as a tool for energy independence and lower utility bills. The pitch focuses on economics, not climate policy.

Even some Trump allies now argue solar is essential for competing with China in the AI race. Rapid deployment is a key advantage. Solar farms can often come online far faster than new fossil-fuel plants or nuclear reactors.

The politics are shifting alongside the economics. Republican-led states dominate solar development pipelines, with Texas alone expected to receive roughly 40% of new projects this year.

Companies are also betting on the trend. Tesla $TSLA ( ▼ 2.18% ) plans large-scale domestic solar manufacturing to support AI data centers and grid expansion.

Resistance remains among fossil-fuel advocates who question solar’s reliability. But even critics increasingly acknowledge it has a role.

Energy debates rarely stay ideological when electricity demand spikes. When the grid gets tight, the fastest power source tends to win.
